## Summary

The Canada Jay Mathematical Competition (CJMC) is a 90-minute, 15-question multiple-choice paper for students in grade 8 or below, recommended for grades 5–8. It is an enrichment contest, not a selection step into CLMC, COMC or CJMO. Formerly the Canadian Mathematical Gray Jay Competition, it was renamed in 2022.

## Context

CMS’s younger open maths competition — 15 multiple-choice questions for grade 8 and below.

## Guidance

### Parent advice

Ask your child's school whether they are entering CJMC. If they are not, CMS arranges a limited number of Open Writing Centres. This paper does not qualify anyone for COMC or the olympiads.

### Student advice

Treat CJMC as a chance to try contest maths. It is not the first step of the CMO pathway — that open gateway is COMC.

### Teacher advice

Register through CMS. For 2026 the Canada/Americas date is 19 November (20 November elsewhere). Registration closes 12 November. Canada pricing is CAD $12 per exam, minimum 3.

## How to prepare

- Try a past CJMC paper under timed conditions
- Practise eliminating wrong multiple-choice options
- Review grade 5–8 number, geometry and counting

## FAQ

### Is CJMC a qualifier for COMC or CMO?

No. CMS does not present CJMC as a selection step. It is a younger open enrichment contest.

### Why was it called the Gray Jay Competition?

The contest was renamed in 2022 when the bird’s common name changed from Gray Jay to Canada Jay.
